Hong Kong Primary and Secondary School Choirs Census 2025

Since the 2017/18 academic year, the TWGHs Kitty Woo Music and Arts Development Centre has played a pivotal role in advancing choral education across the schools of Tung Wah. Over the years, the Centre has set up a joint school choir training system for 15 Primary Schools, established three joint school choirs, and launched a professional development scheme for all the Group’s music teachers.

As the Centre’s choral education initiatives approach their tenth academic year in 2026/27, we partnered with the Hong Kong Virtuous Chorus to launch the “2025 Hong Kong Primary and Secondary School Choir Census.” This landmark project was designed to collect concrete data to guide and inspire the next stage of development.

Conducted from January to May 2025, the Census engaged 316 schools—representing about one-third of Hong Kong’s primary and secondary schools. The study provides a clear picture of the current state of local school choirs and evaluates the role of the Hong Kong Inter-School Choral Festival (HKICF) in advancing choral development. The findings also highlight the value of participation in choral activities, while identifying challenges faced by music educators and their training needs.

This research lays a foundation for future policy planning, curriculum enhancement, and professional training, serving as a starting point for the sustainable development of Hong Kong’s choral sector. The findings were published with the support of the Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
